About this place
DCB Art Aruba presents the work of Diana Betjes, an artist who has lived and worked on Aruba since 1991. According to her official biography, her interest in painting began in 1999 after an oil-painting workshop in Scottsdale, Arizona. After working in oils, she moved to acrylic paint and continued developing a practice that also includes work on canvas, wooden boxes, driftwood and paper collages.
Maps and repurposed printed materials are an important part of Betjes’ current work. Her official website explains that a long-standing interest in travel, geography, history and maps led her to combine and reuse old maps, encyclopedias and travel magazines as backdrops for painting. This approach brings painted subjects together with layered printed material and gives much of her work a recognizable collage element.
The subjects shown across the DCB Art Aruba collection are closely connected to island life. Betjes identifies surfing, snorkeling and scuba diving as sources of inspiration, along with pineapples, palm trees, turtles and other sea life. Her official shop also features works centered on beaches, flamingos, underwater scenes and the cunucu and lighthouse, giving visitors exploring Aruba art a clear view of themes that recur throughout her portfolio.
